The members of the Dáil na nÓg Council came together from all over the country for the second time on 11th September where they continued to focus on the review of the Junior Cycle that is currently being carried out by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA).

A representative of the NCCA came to meet the Council members and explained that they are eager to get the views of as many young people as possible on the Junior Cycle.

(Presentation by National Council for Curriculum and Assessment)

The NCCA wants to see what ideas young people have on a new Junior Cycle and to get their views on specific things like:

- what subjects they think should be taught at junior cycle;
- exams versus continuous assessment; and
- certification.

In response to this the Dáil na nÓg Council is going to organise and run a national consultation day with young people from around the country this November to get their views on how the Junior Cycle could be changed and improved. The views of the young people will be written up in a report which the Council will then launch and present to policy makers making decisions on the future of the Junior Cycle.

As part of the preparation from this consultation the Council heard from two young people who have been involved in running previous consultations with young people in Ireland in conjunction with the Office of the Minister for Children and Young People.

They also discussed how the national consultation day could be managed to ensure the young people who attend are made to feel as comfortable as possible and confident enough to give their opinions.
