Call for Volunteer Note-takers for Dail na nOg 2011
The National Youth Council of Ireland is seeking experienced adult note-takers to volunteer at Dáil na nÓg’s annual event on Friday, 18th November 2011 in Dublin.
Experience of working with young people is an advantage and experience of taking notes/minutes in a paid or voluntary capacity is essential.
*PLEASE NOTE THE DEADLINE FOR THESE APPLICATIONS HAS BEEN EXTENDED - SEE BELOW
The note-takers’ role on the day will be to accurately record the discussions of the young people involved in Dáil na nÓg 2011.
Dáil na nÓg is the National Youth Parliament of Ireland. This annual nationwide event gives young people from around the country an opportunity to represent the views of those under the voting age of 18 at a national level and to call for changes to improve the lives of young people in Ireland. The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) organises Dáil na nÓg on behalf of, and in co-operation with, the Department of Children and Youth Affairs.
The NYCI is looking for adults who are experienced at note-taking to ensure that the young people’s discussions are fully and clearly recorded by an experienced and impartial person. This is an important role because the records of the young people’s discussions will be used in publications about Dáil na nÓg and will also inform the work of the Dáil na nÓg Council after the event.
Participation in Dáil na nÓg as a note-taker is a great opportunity to be involved in a national event that is an important forum for youth participation and decision-making in Ireland.
As a Dáil na nÓg note-taker, you will need to:
• Take an accurate record of young people’s contributions in group discussion sessions.
• Co-operate with the group’s facilitator and talk to them in advance about the process they wish to follow.
• Ensure you don’t contribute to the discussions but act as a silent witness, focussing on recording all participants’ points accurately.
• Ensure that your notes are legible and logical so they can be typed up easily afterwards.
• Participate in a briefing session in advance of Dáil na nÓg.
Person specification:
Essential
• Demonstrable experience of taking notes/minutes in a voluntary or paid capacity
• Ability to accurately report back main points of a discussion on paper in legible and logical way
• Attention to detail
• Empathy for young people
Desirable
• Experience of working with young people, for example as a youth worker (currently or in the past)
• A clear understanding of the role of note-taker and its boundaries
• Time-management skills

• Dáil na nÓg Event (Full day on Friday 18th November 2011)

In keeping with the voluntary ethos of youth work, we are asking note-takers to volunteer their services for Dáil na nÓg. However gift vouchers will be given to note-takers as a small token of our appreciation. Note-takers may submit travel receipts according to the NYCI Policy of Travel Reimbursements for all meetings and events, all of which will take place in Dublin.
Application process:
An application form and Garda vetting form is available on request from the NYCI. To request these please send an e-mail to aoife@nyci.ie or phone the Dáil na nÓg office on 01-478 4122.
