DNN Council 2010/2011 - 9th meeting
At their May meeting, the Dáil na nÓg Council did more work fine-tuning their questionnaire for their research on body image. They also spent time working on research that is looking at the views of young people on participating in Comhairle na nÓg (CNN) and Dáil na nÓg (DNN).
The participation research is being co-ordinated by researchers in the School of Applied Social Studies in University College Cork, and the young people from the Council will be helping them to undertake the research.
The aim of the research is to get young people’s views on their local youth council and on DNN, including how their involvement in it impacts on their lives, families and local community. The research was commissioned by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs so that the Department of Children and Youth Affairs can work to constantly improve the CNN and DNN.
First the members of the Council completed the questionnaire that has been put together by UCC so that their own views are included in the research. Then some members were asked to bring copies of the questionnaire to their Comhairles (chosen at random) in September and to ask the young people there to complete the questionnaires.
After an impromptu music session at lunch time, the Council members worked on their body image questionnaire again. The UCC researchers had drawn up a new draft after the last meeting and the members were asked to fill it out (pilot it) to see how it works.
After this the meeting broke into three small discussion groups and talked about the questionnaire and what they thought of it. They analysed each question carefully to see if it could be improved in any way. The groups then gave detailed feedback which the UCC researchers will use to draw up a final draft of the questionnaire.
In June the members of the Dáil na nÓg Council will have the opportunity to train as peer researchers with an expert from the UK. Then in September they will work with the young people in their Comhairles all over the country to get their views on both body image and on what it’s like to take part in CNN and DNN. The next meeting of the full National Executive will be in September 2011 however the members will be meeting over the summer in smaller groups to progress different aspects of their work.
