The young people of the Dáil na nÓg Council met in Dublin again on 9th October 2010 to continue planning their national consultation day that will be held in Dublin Castle in November. The event will bring over 100 young people together from all over the country to gather their views on how the Junior Cycle could be improved.

The event will be youth-led as the members of the Dáil na nÓg Council are playing a key role in the organisation and running of the day. The Council members will welcome the young people as they arrive, chair the event, give the main presentations, record the young people’s views, and film the event etc.

During their meeting on Oct 9th, Council members worked on the content of the presentation that two of them will give to all the young people at the beginning of the day. They agreed it was important to remind participants that they should adopt ‘blue-sky thinking’. This means that they have the freedom to think of totally different alternatives to the way the Junior Cycle currently works because the body that is gathering views on what the Junior Cycle should look like in future (the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment – NCCA) is open to all ideas.

The Council meeting also gave an opportunity to do a practice-run of the method that will be used on the day to gather the young people’s views on the Junior Cycle. Members took part in group discussions which looked at various questions related to the three key themes of (a) Subjects (b) Assessment (c) Learning styles and then gave feedback on it. The views that the Council members expressed during these discussions will also be fed into the final report that is going to the NCCA.
